Hey There:
It's starting to be a tradition, once a year my friend Blanca of SinSemilla Photography and I do a photo session just for fun. We did one at a golf course, another one in Heritage Park and El Camposanto cemetery in Old Town and this time her vision was a girly type shoot at railroad tracks. Of course, I immediately volunteered to be the model, had the perfect dresses, accessories and lipstick, so off we went.

NBCTweetup at The Tipsy Crow
Hey There:
Last night I was at The Tipsy Crow (@TheTipsyCrow) in Dowtown San Diego for a Tweetup (that's a meetup via Twitter) hosted by NBC San Diego (@NBCSanDiego) and their #1 News Team in the Morning. All those people I see on TV every morning were now in the same room I was, a bit unreal. At one point several people were giving their cards to Marianne Kushi (@KushiNBCSD) and so did I, she has no clue who I am, but still, I gave her my card!
Unfortunately I couldn't get off early enough from work so I arrived a little late. As always I get a mini-panic attack when I see so many people gathered in one place. So I did what I always do in social media events, look for @LaJollaMom and stick to her as my security blanket. Here a pic of me and @LaJollaMom:
The cool thing is that this time I didn't stay with her too long, immediately I saw so many people I've met in previous events and before long I was chatting up with them and walking around the room talking to people.
I've always said I'm really bad at networking, I think I can stop saying that now. While I was talking with @richandcreamy I saw this girl a bit wide eyed and awkward so I smiled at her, we introduced each other, she's @lindsaynball and talking to her I learned she is getting into social media professionally so I introduced her to @MyMelodie. After the introduction walked away to speak with other tweeps. So there, I can no longer say I'm bad at networking!
After the event @redlotusmama had an invitation for the Grand Opening party for Goorin Brothers hat store at the Gaslamp. And she took a bunch of us as her entourage (we almost jay-walked in front of a cop) the event was also fun, we got to try hats, eat and drink. And I have to say, those hats are really cool, I might have to go to the store again and check them out.

Cinco de Mayo 10-Course Dinner
Hey There:
Last week on Cinco de Mayo day, instead of heading to Old Town or any Mexican bar/restaurant and getting tipsy, I decided to have a classy evening at Wine Vault Bistro with Bree and another friend. My good intentions didn't matter, I still got tipsy.
The good thing about it is that our conversation was very interesting, just imagine it, three women in their 20's, 30's and 40's comparing dating experiences. We had a blast. The bad thing is that by the time I was in the middle of my first margarita (that is, after a shot of tequila and some beer) I didn't appreciate the food as much as I would have wanted.
Here's the line-up of the 10-Course Cinco de Mayo Margarita Fiesta dinner
1. Baja Shrimp Tostada | Avocado Mousse | Habañero Relish | Chicken Crackling

2. Sangrita Consommé | Local Cucumber | Cilantro Sprouts

I don't do Tequila shots, so I started by sipping it carefully and then took the plunge, the Sangrita Consomme was served to be a chaser and it was perfect, now I understood the Tequila appeal.
3. Stuffed Squash Blossom | Chile Verde | Cotija Cheese

4. Chicharones | Harissa | Lime | Fleur de Sel
served with:
Cucapa Pale Ale
note:
This beer comes from Mexicali's only micro brewery and the name Cucapa refers to the Native tribes located in Baja and Arizona. Really good beer!
5. Fried Avocado | Chipotle Aïoli | Braised Pork Cheek | Passionfruit Vinaigrette
~ and ~
6. Carnitas Street Taco | Pico de Gallo | Jalapeno Tortilla | Queso Fresco
served with:
Yucatan Tropical Fruit Margarita

This was my favorite Margarita, so I can't blame the blended drink for what it did to me. This is when I started loosing the concentration on the food.
7. Chipotle Braised Short Ribs | Charred Onion Purée | Pepper Chutney

8. Hanger Steak | Pepita Mole | Marble Potato Hash | Bacon Braised Greens
served with:
Classic Hand-Shaken Margarita

OK, so this one contained five different liquors and fresh juices. Really good and by this time we were very happy. I seem to remember we loved the Short Ribs too.

Even the coffee had liquor! No matter, we still drank it all, at this point can't tell you if the dessert was good, but I can say the coffee was great!
Afterwards, we were a bit tipsy to drive, so we went to Shakespeare's pub to have a pot of tea and continue with the interesting conversations. The added bonus of the night was that we sat in the booths overlooking the kitchen serving door (where the servers pick up the food) and we kept seeing this handsome cook. He was hot, with brown skin, muscular and traces of either Native American, Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. Awesome Eye Candy!

Earth Day at Balboa Park
Hey There:
On April 16, I headed to Balboa Park for an Earth Day Festival. It was completely packed with many booths with information about the environment, worthwhile causes, politics and others. Vendors with lots of goodies were also present and of course, food, food, food. I walked around, but headed over the area between the Centro Cultural de la Raza and World Beat Center where I met with some friends.
Had a great time, walked a lot, bought an amazing purse from Good Life Roots and had fun with my friends. Can't really say I learned more about lowering my carbon foot-print, but it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

I Hope He Got Laid
Hey There:
One of my weekly rituals is to go to The Ould Sod on Tuesdays when they have a group of musicians playing live Irish music. I find it soothing and it energizes my creativity. I like to have one beer, read, make a plan of what I will be writing in the following week, maybe talk to some of the regulars, meet new people, etc.
Granted, the last couple of months I haven't been doing too much writing. It has mostly been talking to the other regulars and the bartender, Sara Petite, a local country singer. She's great!
Last night I got there, minding my own business, sitting in my usual spot but this time it wasn't a pleasant experience. Next to me was a couple in their mid-twenties having a drink and talking. Wait....what I meant was....SHE was talking, he had a blank stare, out in space.
This girl annoyed the hell out of me with a loud, shrill voice, valley girl way of speaking and just yapping and yapping and yapping. I mean, non-stop yapping about her current job, her previous jobs, her volunteer work, her vacation in Martha's Vineyard, and so on. I tried very hard to shut her out and concentrate on the music and my book, but it was hard. Now to be fair, they did have a 10 minute conversation where he got to speak and was animated, then she took over again and his blank stare returned.
Not sure if they were a couple, their body language said they've only recently met. Eventually they left for another bar together, he had his arm loosely around her waist and my ears rejoiced. I compared notes with the guy next to me, who was also trying to read and we both agreed, if the guy had to put up with her, he deserves to get some.
I texted a friend and he said something that made my feminist side feel chastised. I said "I can't believe what men put up with to get laid." He said "I can't believe women put up with having sex just to have someone to listen to them." But I still maintain my point, because we have the option to talk non-stop with girl-friends while they talk non-stop as well.
And I really do hope he got laid! He earned it.

Christening and Launch of Navy Ship
Hey There:
I have several family members and friends working at Nassco, San Diego's ship builder. Last weekend there was a christening and launch of the latest ship named USNS William McLean (T-AKE 12). This ship's mission will be to deliver provisions to strike groups and other naval forces.The ship was named after William McLean, a Navy Physicist who conceived and developed the heat-seeking Sidewinder missile.
Personally I don't particularly like military things, men in uniform or guns. But there is something about seeing such a big ship, the music and general mood that just makes you feel all patriotic and makes those men in uniform look really handsome.
